Influence of Culture on Art

This is an art piece that I did, of my re-imagination of my mother's flower pot. The style in which I drew the floral and butterfly patterns were influenced by the patterns on traditional Malaysian pottery. I started this art piece by imaging what the flower pot would look like if it was de-constructed. I then drew it out with pen, then coloured it using watercolour paint. After that, I brought it into photoshop, and made the background a crisp white, and added shadows to make the pieces of the deconstructed pot look like they

were floating.

These are images of my mother's flower pot. This a traditional Malaysian flower pot. They are normally very colourful and have floral motifs. My art style is heavily influenced by culture. The way I illustrate floral motifs, specifically Chrysanthemum flowers is influenced by the floral illustrations on traditional Malaysian pottery.

In a lot of my artwork, I often reference koi fish and chrysanthemums. One of the reasons I often reference koi fish in my art work is because koi fish are symbolic in my culture as well as many east and southeast asian countries as koi fish symbolise good fortune and harmony. It is very common in Malaysia to have koi fish ponds included into the interior design of buildings. In many east and southeast asian cultures, the Chrysanthemum flower signifies life and rebirth, which was the inspiration for the art piece above. This art piece was done using pen, water colour and Adobe photoshop.

The colour schemes that I use in my art which often contain shades of blue and pink are inspired by the colours used on traditional Malaysian pottery. My illustration style when using pen and watercolour is also influenced by the patterns on traditional Malaysian pottery.

The image on the the left is a vintage, traditional Malaysian Chinese painting of Chrysanthemum flowers. I took a picture of this painting when I was visiting a city in Malaysia, called Malacca. This city is known for being rich in cultural heritage and art. The image on the right is an acrylic painting that I did which was inspired by the image on the left.

This is an art piece I did of a jellyfish swimming amongst chrysanthemums using pen, watercolour paint and Adobe photoshop.
